In oriental medicine, turmeric is a precious medicine with many healing effects. Most commonly, turmeric is often used to treat diseases of the digestive tract, especially stomach pain effectively. So how does turmeric help relieve stomach pain?
1. Turmeric and stomach pain
Stomach pain can arise from many different causes. Turmeric has shown therapeutic benefits in treating digestive disorders such as indigestion, ulcers, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, and Crohn’s disease, according to the “Medical Review Review.” The University of Maryland Medical Center notes that the mechanism behind turmeric’s ability to relieve indigestion, or colic, may involve irritation of the gallbladder. Curcumin stimulates the production of bile from the gallbladder and aids bile in the digestive process.

Turmeric contains curcumin which is a polyphenol with anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal properties. It can reduce inflammatory enzyme levels in the body and even improve digestion by helping to produce bile by the gallbladder.
Since it is an antioxidant, it can protect the body from cell damage caused by free radicals. This herb has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine to treat gastritis because it can reduce stomach acid and prevent inflammation of the intestinal wall.
In a 2001 study on the effects of curcumin on gastritis and peptic ulcers, it was found that it was able to relieve the symptoms of gastritis within a few weeks.
The study was conducted on 24 male patients and 21 female patients aged 16-60 with peptic ulcer. 7 female patients and 18 male patients underwent endoscopy to determine the ulcer location and their size. The patients were given 300mg of turmeric-containing capsules five times a day.
Results were studied after 4 weeks of treatment. In 12 cases, the ulcers disappeared after 4 weeks, in 18 patients after 8 weeks. The remaining 20 patients had no ulcers but appeared to have gastritis, gastric erosion and dyspepsia. These patients were given turmeric capsules for 4 weeks. Their discomfort and abdominal pain subsided and they were able to eat food normally. There were no side effects after taking turmeric in all patients with normal kidney and liver function.
Remarkable:
Helicobacter pylori bacteria cause peptic ulcers, gastritis, and stomach cancer. Treating it can be difficult with the many medications available that don’t relieve symptoms.
Curcumin diferuloylmethane seems to inhibit the growth of H.pylori. An in vivo study of 65 clinical isolates of H.pylori was studied when treated with curcumin. It inhibits the growth of all strains of H.pylori. H.pylori-infected mice were given curcumin orally.
It was effective in killing bacteria and protecting mice from stomach damage. This study shows the potential that turmeric may have in the treatment of H.pylori infection and diseases caused by it such as gastritis, peptic ulcer.
